A French fem. subst. derived by the existentialist movement from absurde (v. the article) + the suffix -isme indicating a doctrine; from French into English (20th cent.).


ÉTUDE SÉMANTIQUE / Definitions (jmg)

1. (Exitentialism). The doctrine that human beings struggle in a purposeless universe, that there is no transcendental values no absolute truth and that any attempt to impose an order to chaos is meaningless, by opposition to the traditional tenets of humanism.


2. (Literature). The attitude manifested in the postmodern novel and drama

resulting from the tension emerging from the desire for purpose and order and the steadjast evidence that either are absent from man’s existence.


3. (Generally). The belief that there is no universal order, ni metaphysical order in a Godless world.


3. (By extention). An absurdity, a nonsense.
