ÉTYMOLOGIE / Philology

ἀκμή akmê, a Greek fem. subst : « point, sharp edge of an object », and figuralively : « the higest degree of force, power ; etc », borrowed by modern languages in the 18^th century (English, 1750 ; French, 1751, already a medical term in 1630).

ÉTUDE SÉMANTIQUE / Definitions

1. (Archaic). The phase of highest intensity of a disease.

2. (Basic meaning in English. The French language prefers apogée in this acceptation, while acmé remains connoted as an anglicism dated from 1930). The culmination, the highest point, the highest pitch. The moment of greatest development.

3. (Narratology). The summit of the plot, of suspense, of emotion in a narrative.

4. (Rhetoric). The change in the melodic orientation of a sentence at the articulation between the protasis (the first clause) and the apodosis (the concluding part of the sentence).
